PL India – BS The 10 Successful Business Women To Watch In 2019

Amisha Vora is a co-promoter and Joint Managing Director at Prabhudas Lilladher (PL), one of the country’s most respected financial services firms. She has demonstrated her mettle across business verticals starting with Equity Research. The institutional business of PL grew 36 fold over 6 years under her leadership. She then started PL Investment Banking and raised more than USD 1.8 Bn across 35 deals for Indian corporates. She revamped PL’s Retail & Distribution business which grew higher than market growth and introduced innovative Algorithmic products for retail customers. She was adjudged as the “Best Salesperson of the Year” by Asiamoney for 3 consecutive years while she was heading the institutional business.  She was conferred with the award for “Outstanding Contribution to Equity Markets” by Zee Business Market Analyst Awards while spearheading the PL Group and also was one among “10 Most Powerful Women – Rising Star” featured by Business Today magazine.

Amisha Vora completed her CA in 1987 and started her career as an analyst with JM Financial. Coming from a humble background, she has established herself in the male-dominated industry of financial services. She joined PL in 2000, and her able leadership enabled PL’s institutional business to grow 36-fold in 6 years. Her innovative conferences on Banking (2003) & Power Equipment (2005) led to a 4 – 5 times appreciation in those stocks.

PL wishes to be India’s leading financial services company founded on the principles of ethics and integrity. The primary goal is to partner with the clientele in their wealth creation journey to help fulfill life goals.

In the last few years, PL has introduced a slew of new technological innovations to ensure that the company is geared up for the next leap. PL bases its growth strategy on 3 pillars; Productization, Digitalisation, and Diversification.

“India is poised for tremendous growth in financial assets in the next 10 years as per capita income rises creating many opportunities in the areas of Wealth Management, Asset Management and Funding. I aim to prepare PL to be able to seize this growth opportunity by building the right team and with the right capital allocation”, says Amisha Vora.

PL believes that their dedication towards the core values of ethics & integrity and the concomitant good reputation in the market is their biggest strength. Integrity in thought and behavior is one of the founding principles which PL never compromises on.

Along with this, PL has taken significant measures concerning corporate governance accompanied by valuing the diversity of gender equality in the financial sector. Also, at the organization culture front, PL has always been a proponent of openness and transparency amongst the team to maintain a clear rear-view.

Ms. Vora’s eventful trajectory of reaching her present position looks quite impressive starting with setting up a vibrant research team and an HNI Desk at Networth Investments and Financial Consultancies Pvt Ltd. Foraying into introducing innovative ideas like InvestActive (2013) among others, paved her way to multiple intellectual accolades.

“I have always been a true believer in the power of preparation and perseverance – two values which have helped me reach where I am today”, Ms. Amisha.

Amisha puts across the message to fellow womenfolk to never feel at a disadvantaged position compared to men in the business world. She affirms that the first step towards reducing gender discrimination is to not have any preconceived notions in mind while working. In the case of carrying such unnecessary baggage, professional interaction gets hampered.

Conduct yourself in a calm, confident and professional manner. Let your performance speak for itself.

Constantly changing business dynamics with technological disruption is a common challenge faced by the industry, which PL was able to handle effectively, thanks to new technology and customer touch-points. PL was also the first in India to computerize back-office operations and to adopt WhatsApp for Business in 2018.

Being a hands-on person, Amisha’s inquisitiveness allows her to reach the core of any issue or technological developments. Her leadership can be described as a consultative approach by personal interactions, avoiding miscommunications and consultation with the entire team before making decisions. She firmly believes that management needs to earn the trust of the employees to succeed.

“I have had the opportunity to imbibe first-hand learnings from some of the most inspirational leaders in the Indian corporate community like Azim Premji and N. Narayanmurthy,”, says Amisha about drawing inspiration. She believes in the motto “Be the change you want to see in the world” by Mahatma Gandhi.

In today’s developed markets where a significant chunk of trading has shifted to algorithms, the Indian firms will follow suit. Anticipating the trend, PL has created an Algo Desk to research a wide variety of strategies for all kinds of investors.

Also, PL will be launching a wealth planning portal where clients can plan and execute transactions on-the-go. The reporting tools will continually update clients on their position versus their goals and suggest suitable corrective actions using PL’s recommended allocations and products. “We expect such interactive products to improve risk-adjusted performance for clients and contribute meaningfully to overall client wealth”, added Amisha.
